Weekend mission

Did some shopping yesterday before visiting my grandparents. My mission was to find accessories for an outfit I already have. I need it for a party next week. Luckily mom was with me and helped in the decision making, there was so much to choose from! These necklaces should suit the outfit though (plus a ring, not in the picture).

Walking around I also couldn´t help falling in love with this black leather bag. It wasn´t a part of the mission but it was on sale and I´ve been thinking about buying an new "schoolbag" for a while now. This one is great because A4 sized paper fits easily and the bag itself doesn´t weigh much at all. (In other words it will be easy to pack and bring on trips.)

So, good results. Now it´s back to the thrifty way of life.

Lights out

Thought I´d "celebrate" Earth Hour tonight and turn out all my lights between 8.30 pm and 9.30 pm. Being otherwise a bit of a light junkie it´s the least I can do. It won´t change the world but I think it´s a great initiative.
It has already begun, with Sydney being the first city to officially turn out the lights, and it is going around the world in 25 hours. (The campaign also began in Sydney a couple of years ago with 2,2 million people switching of their lights.) Today over 80 countries: 3,929 cities, villages and localities across the globe will participate.
So get those candles out and enjoy an hour of low-lit cosiness. It can´t be bad. :)

First spring(ish) walk of the year! I love walking on dry sidewalks! (Sounds silly but it´s oh so true.) It feels like a luxury after a long and unusually snowy winter. And the sun was shining and there were people outside enjoying the pretty, although chilly weather. Ah, Helsinki is finally coming alive again.
Spring I welcome you!

Admission: I´m hooked on the MTV series "The City". It´s a bit embarrassing to admit. Guess I´m a TV-snob after all. Still, there´s something about the show that catches my interest. Maybe it´s the glamour, the drama, the exciting life of New York. Young women in my own age living completely different lives but still wanting the same things as me. It gives you a little boost when you´re down, slouching in your pyjamas feeling as glamorous as old potato peel. It makes you go "Hey, I can do that. I can be fun, stylish and ambitious. Equally brave in mind as in choice of shoes". (Conveniently forgetting the slush outside and all the seasonal reasons for not fixing your hair before leaving.) It´s a bit like a sugar rush. Only The City is my guilty pleasure.

So, what´s your guilty TV pleasure? Come on now, don´t blush!

My To-Do List

10 things I´m going to do when my job ends:

2. Read all those books I bought at the last sale.
3.Visit family and friends.
4. Go to the gym. And take sunny walks.
5. Sit in parks and cafes, watching people.
6. Watch the ENTIRE movie on week nights (not just the beginning and then go to bed).
7. Eat proper breakfasts while reading the morning paper.
8. Play the piano.
9. Paint.
10. Enjoy!

Dead mamal in my shower?

I won´t show you a picture of my latest adventure. It would most certainly gross you out. I had put it off for days but I just couldn´t leave the drain in my shower clogged any longer. So, bravely this morning I removed the plastic thingy (that should be white) and prepared myself for the worst. It wasn´t enough. With the plastic followed a thick string of black gunge dripping and smelling quite fowl. I had to fight the urge to vomit. "What is that?" Was my first horrid reaction. It looked like a dead rat drenched in oil. "That can´t be hair? My hair isn´t that color!" The rat lay limp on the tile floor and I didn´t dare touch it again. Urgh.
Looking down the drain I couldn´t see much except more black liquid. Sticking my hand, or anything else attached to my body, down there was out of the question. Instead I attacked with my only weapon, a big bottle of drain cleanser that promised to remove everything over night. I squirted it down the hole and prayed it would work. Now there was only two things left to do. 1. Wait. 2. Remove the black lump from my shower. Again, urgh.
I opted for the doggie-poo-method and fetched a plastic bag. I then scooped the gunge into the bag and ran to the garbage with it. Fighting the will of my stomache I stuffed it as far down the bag as I could and then washed my hands like a maniac. Done. Gone. Huge bravery.
After all that drama I needed to rest for a while. Slowly I had to admit to myself that I might have overreacted. It had to be my own hair right? A bit moldy and funky perhaps but what else could it be? Although if I really loose that much hair all the time, shouldn´t I be bald by now? It can´t grow that much, can it? Or perhaps it can, over a long period of time.

So maybe I should just clean my drains a bit more often? Not wait for them to clog. Not wait for parts of me to decompose before I do it. That would perhaps be sensible and grown up.

Or maybe it really was a rat?

Talked with my international planner at school today. It´s finally time for the last paperwork before I´m officially enrolled at UTS. Jesss!
I´m doing all the forms this weekend and handing them in on Monday. Then they are faxed (yes, FAXED) to Sydney. All that way over seas and continents just in a short moment. Got to love technology.
So, time to face that form fear (I always mess them up and need new copies)and then they´re off. Buh Bye.

Have a great weekend!

Fun day

Had my talks in Kauniainen today. It was fun! The pupils were attentive and the library staff really kind.
I think it went relatively well. I tried to talk slow and not ramble (I have a tendancy to speed up when I get nervous). And I tried to have some kind of structure so I wouldn´t loose my main theme. Talking for 45 minutes is a challenge!
Had some sushi downtown afterwards feeling very inspired. Writing is a passion!

Sore throat

My throat has been acting up the past few days. Including today. I really hope it isn´t sore tomorrow during the talks at the library. It´s hard enough controlling your voice when you are a little bit nervous.
I don´t have time for the flu right now! (And I don´t want it either.) I´ll just have to drink tea, rest and hope for the best tonight.

Any other tips on DIY throat soothing?

Countdown ...

Starting tomorrow I have only 2 weeks and 2 days left at work. After that I´m going to be a full time writer for three months. Jay!
It´s something I´ve wanted for a long time. Finally I get to concentrate on the one thing that I love the most and make up my own work schedule. No more cross eyed, after work script reading or late night delete button pushing.
I get a small preview of my "new" life on Wednesday. I´ve been invited to a library to talk about my writing, and the audience will consist of about one hundred 7th graders. I´m really excited and a bit scared at the same time. But I´ll let you know how it went.

So, 12 workdays (minus Wednesday when I´m at the library) and counting ... :P

I´ve got tickets!

I´m flying to Sydney! Well obviously I´m flying, but now I actually have tickets. Wohoo! I´m leaving on the 14th of July and will return around the 17th of December. That´s 5 months on the other side of the world!
I bought these tickets because they are flexible with the return date. And the route is pretty straight forward. Helsinki - Frankfurt - Sydney (with some kind of fuel stop on the way).

I´m so excited! I´m really going. No matter what happens. Australia, here I come!

I heart dotted skirts

While longing for spring I thought I´d show a couple of the skirts L so generously gave away at her "house-leaving-party" last weekend, wanting to get rid of some excess stuff. Lets see if I ever get to use these cuties outside ...

Too grown up ...

Note of the day: Do not binge eat Sacher cake. It might sound like a good idea at first but belive me, it isn´t. I ... Need ... Salt. :/
(Apparently I´m growing up, sweets and merry-go-rounds make me nauseous. Sad. Sniff.)

End of Note.

Melt, melt, melt!

Gaaah, I´m so fed up with the snow right now. It´s wet and cold and sticky and it ruins your shoes and seeps through your clothes in no time. I want summer! Or at least a bit of spring. I want to use my new London heels and dig out those neglected sunglasses from under the bed. I want to feel the warm sun against my face while sitting on a park bench reading a book. Aaah.
But until that happens (if ever!) I´m just going to lay here in my warm wool socks, sipping tea, and imagine myself on a beautiful Australian beach. Or any other place warmer than +2 degrees.

Oh baby, baby

90s music, crazy dancing, drag, angel wings and rosewater cupcakes ... Hmm, describing last nights "house-leaving party" at L´s place isn´t really working without conjuring up an image of some far out alternative club for slightly disturbed fairies ... Which it wasn´t. (I think?) Okay, lets just say that I had a blast! :) And I got some fab clothes home with me. Thank you L!

Today I have a sore throat from singing too much Britney S. but other than that life is pretty good. I´m going to my parents house to wish my dad a happy birthday and I´m also getting the last pages of my script back from mom. Wohoo! Love it when things move forward.

Have a great sunday!

I recieved a message today saying that I´m getting some money from Svenska kulturfonden. Wohoo! I´m so relieved.
It´s not as much as I had hoped for, it won´t cover all my monthly expenses, but every little cent helps. Now I really am able to take the next three months "off" to finish my next novel. Iiiiik. After that it´s mostly up to the publishers.

Working from home will be great but challenging. You need a new kind of self-discipline. But more about that later. Right now I´m going to enjoy the fact that it´s friday and there´s a great weekend ahead.
Have fun!

The Gift of Giving

I used to dislike getting people gifts. Not because I´m stingy but because I was really afraid of buying the wrong thing, afraid that everyone at the party might HATE it.
That has changed over time. I think it´s partly a self-confidence thing. I´ve come far enough in my journey of selfdiscovery to realise that someone actually might like the same things as me. And an idea for a gift is not stupid just because I came up with it. It might even be a great idea! (Yeah well, good for me.)

And good for my family and friends since many of them seem to have birthdays this time of year. :) And I´m actuallt loving the hunt for nice presents. It´s almost like that old saying, that it´s more fun to give than to recieve. It really makes you happy!
(Not that I mind a small wrapped up surprise now and then ...) :P

Almost like christmas

I went a bit bonkers when this internet bookshop had its sale, I ordered a couple of books I otherwise wouldn´t buy. One teaches you to detox your body and the other one is going to get me fit with 15 minutes of training a day. Wohoo! ( I think ... It might mean that I have to get up from the sofa ones in a while. Bugger.)
The Jo Nesbö novel is also mine. The CD-books are for my dad. He travels alot and listens to them while driving. I don´t really have the patience for them myself.
Anyway, it´s always great when you get this big box of new books and you unwrap it like a kid on christmas eve. I can´t help it, I love books!

Knitted fashion

I started knitting this thing at christmas and it´s finally finished! I didn´t plan for it to be so wide but apparently knitwear has a mind of its own. And on the plus side, I can now use it both as a scarf and a shawl. That might come in handy since my office at work is freezing most of the time.
(And if I ever hurt my neck, I can probably use it as support. It´s that compact.) :)
