Yellow and Green

Today's dinner had a certain 70s look to it, probably thanks to the gherkin and "out of a can" pineapple slices.

But who cares about the visuals when it turned out really well! The carrot-potatoe purée actually started out as soup for lunch, but after a few hours in the fridge, the leftovers had turned rather solid and worked perfectly with the string beans. Mmm.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should indulge in a bit of dessert ... I was given so much chocolate on Sunday and it's just screaming at me from the pantry. *Eat me! Eat me!* Oh dear.

Cheers!

Doomed Gift

Now that you've overcome one challenge, you can take on a new one!

The words of a dear friend who gave me this "grow your own Parsley" kit on Sunday. She knows I'm not always to be trusted with living plants, they usually end up wilted, and thought I could do with some practice now that I have more time on my hands.
I have a feeling I might start missing my thesis ... At least I couldn't murder it. In the literal sense anyway.

Luckily the seedlings live in a pretty pink pot, and I'll let you know if they ever decide to show themselves above the soil. (Although I wouldn't hold my breath.)

Cheers!

And the Oscar goes to ...

Blimey, I feel a bit groggy, partly because I stayed up all night and couldn't really sleep properly in the morning, and partly because I consumed way too much sugar during the late hours of the Oscars and now have a sugar hangover. My life has definitely been like a box of chocolates ... Literally.

Can't really complain though, I had a lot of fun. It's difficult to comment on the big winners like The Artist and Hugo because I haven't seen them yet, but I'm looking forward to forming my own opinions. Is The Artist really a great film or did the Academy just get caught up in the "old-time" spectacle of black and white, silent movies?

Of course, I couldn't help re-posting my own photo of the Kodak theatre from last year. It looks quite different without all the Oscar hoo haa around it, but it was still exciting to see the theatre from the inside and actually stand in the auditorium where they all sit on the night, and walk the winner's walk. You just have to go "Look! I've been there!" when you see it all again on TV.

Okay, time to tackle last night's dinner dishes. Thank goodness for my darling dishwasher!

Cheers!

Sunday programme

Good evening!

My dinner guests have left and I'm preparing myself for an all-nighter in front of the telly and the Oscars. For the first time ever, I'm free Monday morning and can actually watch the whole show from start to finish if I want to!

Anywho, I had a lovely evening and hopefully my friends enjoyed it too. The lemon cheesecake was very nice and I couldn't help also dressing up my cake dish with cute foods.

I dressed myself in an old, comfy dress that allowed plenty of eating. And I'm pretty certain any leftovers will be consumed during the night. I'm not the one who has to fit into gorgeous but oh so snug gala-dresses.

Hope your week will start of nicely!
Cheers

Lemony goodness

This piece of cheesecake was consumed at the Cheesecake factory in LA last year. Tomorrow I'm serving my own home made cheesecake at the dinner party, and if all goes well, it might actually be even better!
It's made with dark muscovado sugar and a top coating of tart lemon curd. I had never made lemon curd before so I was a bit nervous, but even if the texture isn't perfect, the taste is lovely. Let's hope it all comes together for tomorrow!

Okay, now I'm going to turn on the TV and see which Finnish song will be competing in the Eurovision song contest in May. Please, please be something decent ...

Cheers!

Abrakadabra!

I´m having a small dinner party on Sunday to celebrate the handing in of my thesis. On the guest list are some of the girls who have been there, in and outside the classroom, since the very beginning of uni in 2003.

Anyway, I stumbled upon this photo and thought it would be nice to have those magic powers again while cleaning the flat and carrying home the groceries for Sunday.

Some green screen "acting" at Warner Brothers.
Expelliarmus!

It's also nice to take a trip down memory lane and read the entries from last spring's US visit. I had so much fun and to think the trip was the final kick I needed to start planning my new career path. And now I'm on my way (in very, very small steps)!

Cheers!

One Man Ensemble

We had choir practice yesterday and began singing May the Road Rise to Meet you by David Hamilton (1990). It's a really beautiful, traditional Irish song and this time I'm singing bass together with the boys, although an octave higher.

I tried to find our particular version of the song online, but instead I stumbled upon a bunch of videos of people doing multitracks, that is singing all the voices themselves and then mixing them together so it sounds like an ensemble. I really enjoyed for example this guy singing A Celtic Blessing . Have a listen!

Cheers!

Winds of Change

So, two "major" things have happened in the last couple of months. Major is possibly the wrong word but they are important events in my life, and the result of some extensive work.

  1. I finally handed in my MA thesis and will hopefully get my degree this spring. It's weird knowing I will never (although never say never) do another class at Helsinki university. I can't however say I will never study again because ...
  2. In the autumn I'm moving to London to do a Master's degree in screen- and playwriting. I'll be able to develop my skills in writing for TV, film and stage which is really exciting, and also a bit scary.
Until then I'll be doing this and that, working on some projects and making sure to spend time with friends and family. After some tough times things are looking up and I want to keep it that way!

Cheers!

Cream and Garlic

Happy to have two hands again! My finger is soldiering on despite last nights close encounter with the oven, but it'll probably look weird for the next few days.

Luckily I could go through with my latest food experiment, vegetable patties with lots of fresh herbs. To that I made some tzatziki and a tomato/avocado/feta cheese salad. To judge the culinary outcome, I invited my grandmother for lunch. She seemed fine when she left ...

I also fed her the ill-fated Shrove Tuesday buns which I pimped best I could. They weren't horrible but I think I'll go for store bought ones next time.

Hope you're weekend's been nice and enjoy the evening!

Cheers

Burned

Hello,

Today I planned to show you some lovely home made, golden brown Shrove Tuesday buns, only they turned out really pale and ugly so I'm not uploading that particular photo. I'm just clinging to the hope that they'll at least taste nice with the cream and almond filling ...

I also burned my right index finger taking the buns from the oven and can now only use my left hand. I'm afraid the bag of frozen peas will attach itself permanently to me. Oh well, I'll get back to you when I can type properly ...

Cheers!

Clooney and Soy bolognese

Today in the food challenge I tackled my reluctance to use soy. The result was a rather tasty pasta sauce even though it lacked one very important ingredient, garlic. I was certain I didn't need to buy more garlic and then, way too late, realised my garlic had dried up. Next time ...

I spent most of the day running errands, and then ended it with The Descendants at the cinema. Perhaps not the smartest choice on the day that should have been my mom's 50th birthday, by I held it together pretty well. Unfortunately I wasn't blown away by the film, which I know puts me in a very small minority. But some things just didn't work for me ... Oh well.

Have a nice evening!
Cheers!

Beautiful tragedy

Hello!

Had a lovely morning out with my grandmother today. First we attended the final rehearsal of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra who are playing Brahms and Beethoven tonight. Neither of us had yet been inside the fairly new Helsinki Music Centre so it was a fun experience. And despite the name, it's always nice to start the day with something like Brahms' Tragic Overture.

The final rehearsal tickets are only 3 euros each so do try it some time if you have a well timed morning off!

After the "concert" we had lunch in an Italian restaurant and then did our grocery shopping together. I got the ingredients for tomorrow's food challenge. Couldn't find any dried chilies though, so I'll have to improvise with fresh ones. Fingers crossed!

Cheers!

Happy New year!

Yes, very, very belated. My apologies. But so much has already happened this year that I was forced to save time and energy wherever I could. Now however, I'm looking forward to calmer times and much more blogging!

I'm not celebrating Valentine's Day in any special way, but I did make a beautifully red beetroot soup that sort of matches the theme. It also begins my Food Challenge. As from today I'm going to start preparing more food from scratch, and learn how to make new dishes. I've eaten like a poor student with no knowledge of healthy cooking for far too long. Now, with more time on my hands, there are no excuses!

Talk to you soon!
Cheers!
