Hello hello

My entries are far between right now, I'm so caught up preparing for my last month here in Finland and the big move. People are also rather busy during the summer months, there isn't much time for reading blogs, and that's the way it's supposed to be!

Once I get to London, I'm going to give the blog a proper energy boost. Maybe redesign it a bit so the look fits the content better (although I enjoy gazing at the Norwegian mountains in my current header).

It's not all stress though. This weekend I participated in a lovely hen party, spending a whole day with great people, and I also had a chance to couple work with summer pleasure by taking a small bite out of my long reading list in the park.

See you soon!

Soon to be homeless alien

Good morning!

I feel a bit nauseous. No, I'm not pregnant, but things are starting to happen. A week ago I ended my gym membership, two days ago I signed a lease on my flat, I'm now officially a landlord and I have a tenant. Finally, yesterday, I bought a plane ticket to London, one-way. On September 5th I'm flying over there with the plan to stay for at least 2 years. Iiik, I'm excited but also nervous. This is really happening!

I'm super grateful that I already have a few friends in London who are taking me in while I look for a place of my own. It makes it all much less scary and stressful. And really, what's there to be scared about? With a bit of work, things usually sort themselves out. (She said, jinxing all her future luck.)

Celebrating my new profession as landlord I had a small tub of ice cream. That's how posh these things get.

Have a great day!

Beach volleyball

I spent over 4 hours this evening playing volleyball at the beach. I hadn't touched a volleyball in over 10 years, which clearly showed, but it was still really good fun. The other players were great sports, not minding too much if you messed up, and we all had our own "style" of playing. I look forward to doing it again and improving my game!

I jogged home from the beach and showered off all the sand. Then I made myself two lovely sandwiches and my absolute favourite, watermelon!

Hopefully I'm not too sore tomorrow, having used some new muscles. I also hope I won't wake up with a large bruise on my forehead. A ball hit me smack on, but luckily I have a hard head. :)

Enjoy summer!

There's an infinite amount of renovation and restoration blogs. Yesterday I did my bit for the beautification of my home, spackling, sandpapering and painting this door I'd brought down from the attic. The conditions up there had not been kind ...

No matter how much spackle and sandpaper I used, I couldn't get the surface of the door completely smooth, but since the door is rough all over, you could almost call it a feature. (No?)

At least it's loads better  than before, so I'm happy! Now when do I get my own home makeover TV show?

Saturday, 7 July 2012

This isn't a big deal for most people, but for me it was one of those moments. For the first time, probably ever, I felt I could go on and on forever.

I have written about running before. Most summers I've had the good intention of becoming a jogger. It has usually ended with one or two attempts and blistered and achy feet. What changed this year?

1. I finally bought a pair of shoes that fit my flat feet perfectly. Their details are so neon they probably glow in the dark.

2. Today, without any warning, I found the ideal tempo and style for my body and state of fitness. I could run the entire time without bursting lungs, cramp, or that nasty taste of blood in my mouth. As I kept on going I actually told myself (internally) "OMG, this is what it's all about! Look at me! I'm doing it!".

Those of you who have followed this blog know that I have always had issues with running, so the revelation today was really that big.

Now I'm really scared I'll loose my mojo for next time. What if I can't get back in the zone? I really have to fight myself to keep the tempo down. No pumping music on my Ipod.

Still, happy happy!

One wedding, one cottage and no funeral

There is so much going on, the summer weeks are just flying by. I've spent a few days on the road, or rather the tracks since I travelled mostly by train. The purpose of my trip to Ostrobothnia was Lotta and Gerry's beautiful wedding, and a visit to my dad.

Despite some dodgy weather, the wedding was lovely and it was great meeting up with old and new friends from Finland and Great Britain. It was a lunch-time ceremony with delicious food and some crazy finnish dancing, and then in the evening everyone gathered for a relaxed after party with more fabulous food, music and games.

The beautiful couple. The groom in traditional kilt.
A bunch of us, including the bride, studied together at uni so the wedding doubled as a fun class reunion.

Me and former study buddy Mona.
The day after the wedding I took a bus 100 kilometer south and stayed with my dad for a couple of days. We spent some time at their summer cottage and I loved being surrounded by "wild nature" again. Nothing says summer like wind in the trees and a great sea view (and unfortunately a mosquito or two ...)

Now I'm back in Helsinki and the summer weather seems finally to have arrived. Looking forward to a few uneventful days so I can properly enjoy it.
